What’s the best way to live caption a scripted event?

Scripted events don’t have to be a challenge.

We made it easier with ScriptFeed.

Scripted events, such as commencement ceremonies, awards shows, or conferences can be quite the arduous assignment for captioners of any skill level. Scripted events are often dense with critical information such as people’s names, a list of a speaker’s accolades, quotes, etc. This all is compounded when the speaker talks at an unnaturally fast pace in an invariable tone, which often is the case when one reads from a script.

That’s why we developed a software program, ScriptFeed, to allow captioners to feed in the script line-by-line and go into manual mode when the speaker goes off script. This has made captioning scripted events significantly easier on the transcriber and has also resulted in excellent communication access for those attending the event.

One of the most important elements to successful captioning of an event is receiving a relatively final script at least 12 hours in advance of the event. This allows the captioner to prepare ahead of time and, if using our program, enter the script into ScriptFeed. If last minute changes are made to a script, they can easily be implemented into the program before the event begins.

If your event involves the reading of names, such as at a commencement or awards ceremony, we are able to caption the names if there are 250 or less individuals lined up in a random order. We can transcribe unlimited names if they are lined up in the same order as a list that is provided, but that challenging for the event organizer to orchestrate. If there are over 250 graduates lined up in a random order, we recommend looking into Marching Order. This program allows graduates to scan a QR code as they begin to cross the stage which reads their name aloud and projects the name to a screen.
